University of Hertfordshire’s new Engineering Degree Apprenticeships to create next generation of engineers @UniofHerts

From September 2018 the University of Hertfordshire will deliver higher level training to tomorrow’s engineers with a new degree apprenticeship programme.

The University is launching the new apprenticeship programme as part of Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, running 6 – 10 November 2017. This nationwide initiative encourages engineering communities, including universities and schools to inspire the next generation of engineers and meet the profession’s future needs; by 2024 more than 186,000 people with engineering skills will be needed each year, worldwide.

Dr Rodney Day, Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology, said: ‘We have a long history of working closely with business and industry, driving innovation with our research and developing teaching programmes that produce highly skilled engineers. We know that employers value the active learning experience that is part of all of our engineering and technology courses and we’ve included this element in our degree apprenticeships to ensure our students develop industry relevant skills.

Dr Day added: ‘The new degree apprenticeships in engineering are another example of how our close links with industry are bringing benefits to both local and regional businesses, and our students.’

Budding engineers will be able to combine work and study, from September 2018, with an Engineering Degree Apprenticeship. The University is offering a wide range of engineering courses which will help them to specialise in mechanical, manufacturing, automotive, aerospace or electronic engineering. The degree apprenticeships have been developed in consultation with employers and will be delivered at the University’s Hatfield campus.

For individuals, Degree Apprenticeships are a unique way of gaining a degree-level qualification, while also gaining on-the-job practical salaried experience within their industry. Degree Apprenticeships are tuition-free and flexible opportunities in higher education, and an alternative to traditional higher education routes.

For employers, Degree Apprenticeships are a means of training and developing new and existing employees in their organisation. The University of Hertfordshire works in tandem with employers to ensure that high quality Degree Apprenticeship programs meet the needs of business and staff, as well as the needs of the apprentice.
