Learn the fundamentals of process safety

IChemE’s flagship course, Fundamentals of Process Safety, provides an understanding of the key principles of process safety and its management. It is essential for anyone who is involved in the design, modification, operation and maintenance of a major hazard or process plant, or those who wants to gain a thorough overview of how process safety works and the human, environmental and business consequences of poor process safety.

Hundreds of people across the world have participated in this intensive course, taking the knowledge they have gained back to their workplaces and contributing towards producing safer working environments and lessening the likelihood of future incidents. It is essential for anyone who is involved in the design, modification, operation and maintenance of a major hazard or process plant, or those who want to gain a thorough overview of how process safety works.

Fundamentals of Process Safety is a blend of theory and practical activities and all delegates undergo an assessment at the end of the course to review their learning. There is also an emphasis on the need for participants to take ownership of their own CPD beyond the course, thinking about how they will apply the learning to their day-to-day work and what further learning might still be required.

The course references the six functional safety areas of IChemE’s process safety framework: knowledge and competence, engineering and design, systems and procedures, assurance, human factors and culture. It is aimed at process industry practitioners seeking to expand or refresh their process safety knowledge across a broad range of topics.

The course features a mix of interactive exercises and workshops, case studies and theory covering the core areas of a process safety framework, as outlined below:

Day 1

  • importance of process safety
  • a model for process safety
  • hazard and risk
  • hazard identification and evaluation

Day 2

  • consequences – toxicity and fires
  • consequences – explosions
  • chemical reactions
  • flammable atmospheres

Day 3

  • project development
  • design safety
  • risk assessment
  • operations
  • asset integrity

Day 4

  • management of change
  • management systems
  • human factors
  • leadership and culture
  • process safety performance

Day 5

  • multi-stage case study
  • emergency response
  • course feedback
  • course assessment

IChemE runs this course three times a year across the UK, as well as in multiple locations internationally. The course is also hugely popular as an in-company training option, with some organisations formally integrating the course into a wider staff training programme.

The next course coming up is 23-27 March in Manchester, UK, so visit www.icheme.org/fundamentals for further details, as well as more dates.
