Ultrasonic thickness gauges for Quick & Accurate Measurements – even through thick coatings.

In the field of industrial ultrasonic testing, ultrasonic thickness measurement is a method of carrying out Non Destructive Testing (NDT) of the thickness of a solid element (normally metal – although many other solid engineering materials – such as HDPE – can be measured).  The technique used is based on the time taken by the ultrasound wave that is introduced by a piezo electric crystal (“the probe”) to return back to the surface of the material.

While a thickness gauge is accurate and relatively inexpensive, the chief advantage of this type of instrument is that access to only one side of the material is required to take a measurement – making this type of instrument ideal for inspecting levels of wear and tear and corrosion on hollow structures such as pipe work and pressure vessels.

Additionally, Cygnus Instruments (a UK-based global expert for over 30 years in the design and manufacture of thickness gauges) has developed a specialist niche in making instruments that measure remaining substrate thickness “through” protective coatings  (alleviating the engineer of the need to remove – and then replace – these often expensive coatings).

The Cygnus 4+ unit is an extremely accurate and simple to use ultrasonic thickness gauge and as such is perfect for testing levels of wear and corrosion on industrial machinery, factory infrastructure, boiler tubes and pressure vessels.  This unit has been rigorously tested to military specification: drops from height onto concrete; extreme vibrations and; extreme temperatures – and is also completely environmentally sealed to IPX7 and IP6X.

And while the Cygnus 4+ with intuitive menus and a large colour LCD display has been specifically designed to be easy to operate, it also has an excellent array of key features including: versatile measuring modes (multiple-echo, single-echo and echo-echo); an A-scan display that helps to verify true back wall readings in difficult measuring applications; data logging that stores up to 500,000 readings; and the Cygnus developed MSI™ system – which verifies stable and reliable readings.
