Keeping tabs on indoor air quality

~ IAconnects launches easy-to-use indoor air quality questionnaire ~

According to the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, we spend up to 90 per cent of our time indoors in the UK. This means we could be exposing ourselves to invisible sources of air pollution, whether dust, pollen or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To help businesses identify problem areas and better understand their indoor air quality (IAQ), IAconnects, a specialist in IoT monitoring solutions, has launched an easy-to-use tool. This is free and can be accessed on the company’s website.

Air quality is a big concern in commercial facilities. Research suggests that poor air quality can reduce productivity by up to ten per cent. Combined with the higher rate of sick days seen in environments with poor air quality, this is estimated to cost the global economy over £178 billion each year.

The new IAQ tool contains nine questions and takes users approximately five minutes to complete. It covers topics including regulatory compliance, health and productivity and IAQ management. It also assesses current monitoring capabilities and technologies, providing a score from 0-100 per cent that indicates the person’s potential to improve their IAQ monitoring. The higher the percentage, the greater the opportunity for the user to improve.

“For businesses, air quality helps determine employee health and productivity, so it’s important to establish a baseline,” explained Claire Robinson, sales director at IAconnects. “It’s easy to jump to quick fixes, like opening windows and installing basic ventilation systems, but these can only go so far without having smart, real-time monitoring to provide the necessary insights.

“We launched the tool to help raise awareness of indoor air quality and the benefits of active monitoring,” continued Robinson. “By providing a tailored score out of 100, we aim to empower business owners and facility managers with clear insights into their current air quality standards. This score offers a starting point to explore technical solutions that can enhance both their monitoring capabilities and the overall well-being of their spaces.”

Equipping their sites with IoT monitoring solutions such as sensors, connectors and gateways, facilities managers (FMs) and business owners can help tenants get a clear view of their air quality and how it changes over time. With this information, they can also start to make informed decisions — for example, about the types of products that they want to use.
