Blueshift, a technology leader in thermal protection systems (TPS), is presenting at SAMPE North America, to showcase the effectiveness of its AeroZero® TPS Polyimide in protecting carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites at high temperatures up to 500 °C for space, aerospace, and other extreme heat environments.
The presentation by Modess Seyednezhad, Senior Thermal Engineer, will highlight that while CFRP composites are widely used across the industry for their strength, lightweight nature, and durability, they often face limitations when exposed to extreme temperatures. These conditions can lead to thermal degradation, delamination, and matrix cracking—issues that compromise their performance in the demanding environments where they are typically applied.
Blueshift will present its recently developed and tested AeroZero® TPS Polyimide as a lightweight and heat-resistant solution that acts as a protective layer to the composites. The audience will see the results of extensive testing of the TPS, in comparison to other insulates, such as cork, with direct contact heat sources of up to 500°C.
By performing tests and measuring the ‘cold side’ temperature (the opposite side to the heat source) to validate the thermal modelling which replicates the experiment set-up, geometry and boundary condition, Modess will address two primary objectives:
- Build and validate a predictive model that estimates the ‘cold-side’ temperature of CFRP at extreme heat levels (e.g., 2,000 °C), beyond in-house testing capabilities.
- Demonstrate AeroZero® TPS Polyimide’s insulation capabilities versus cork and other commercial products.
The results will demonstrate that AeroZero® TPS Polyimide delivers superior thermal protection at less than half the thickness of cork, and when four layers of the material are applied, insulation performance increases by 38% compared to cork under identical test conditions.
Modess says that SAMPE provides the perfect opportunity to showcase Blueshift’s solutions: “SAMPE is a key date in our calendar, and I am excited to showcase to our customers how our AeroZero® TPS Polyimide solution outperforms competing materials in terms of flexibility and durability in design applications.”
Modess’ speaking slot is scheduled for 9am in Room 123 on the 20th May.
