INEOS Electrochemical Solutions, Rolls Royce SMR and Sellafield Limited were among the prize winners as the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) celebrated the achievements from across the chemical and process engineering sector at the 2025 IChemE Global Awards. The gala dinner on 20 November in Manchester saw award winners recognised across 16 categories including sustainability, food and drink, biopharma, equality, diversity and inclusion and training and development.

With more than 100 finalists, the program featured an international line-up of winners and highly commended entries, including those from the US, Germany, Denmark, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and more.

INEOS Electrochemical Solutions received the top honour for their work in pioneering scalable alkaline electrolyser technology, driving industrial decarbonisation forward.

Its Hydraeon project – a modular 25MW alkaline water electrolyser system built on 125 years of chlor-alkali expertise – sets a new benchmark for safe, reliable and large-scale low-carbon hydrogen production.

Hydraeon incorporates proprietary high-performance electrode coatings, mechanically robust cell and system design, and a modular architecture optimised for scalable deployment. The technology has been engineered to meet the requirements of continuous industrial operation, with a focus on process safety, operational reliability, and maintainability.

The project saw INEOS clinch both the IChemE Oil, Gas and Energy Transition Award (sponsored by Kent) and the Outstanding Achievement in Chemical and Process Engineering Award (sponsored by ExxonMobil).

Rolls Royce SMR’s two prizes came via the Nuclear Technology Award (supported by IChemE’s Nuclear Technology Special Interest Group) and the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award (sponsored by Shell). Sellafield Limited lifted the Process Safety Award (sponsored by PM Group).

Other IChemE Award winners included: University of Sheffield, winner of the Biopharma Award, Newcastle University, winner of the Research Project Award, Cemex UK, winner of the Industry Project Award and Wildfire Energy, winner of the Sustainability Award.

“The breadth and diversity of the entries clearly demonstrate how chemical engineering touches so many areas of society. It is this richness and the positive impact that our discipline makes, that we recognise with tonight’s awards,” said IChemE President, Professor Raffaella Ocone when opening the ceremony.

“We are honouring the very best in chemical, process and biochemical engineering. From sustainable fuel technologies and innovative water solutions, to pioneering advances in food and drink, nuclear technology and healthcare, the IChemE Global Awards span an extraordinary range of industries and sectors.”

Incoming President of ICheme Ollie Folayan closed the ceremony, adding: “These awards have been a celebration of the wonderful, innovative and diverse range of work that the chemical engineering community – our community – is leading on. Congratulations to all of our winners and highly commended finalists, they should all be very proud of their achievements.”
