Crafting Charlotte Tilbury’s Glamorous Advent Journey

When Hunter Luxury first embarked on developing an advent calendar for Charlotte Tilbury, we knew we had to rise to the occasion. The Charlotte Tilbury Beauty brand promises every woman “her red-carpet moment, her slither of A-list glamour.” To deliver on that promise, every aspect of our product needed to be perfect, starting with the packaging.

Our journey began with inspiration days, where our Beauty Innovations team immersed in the latest trends and explored technical possibilities. It blended creativity and precision, ensuring our concepts aligned with Charlotte Tilbury’s 2023 theme of “Jewels.”

The result was a highly imaginative advent calendar – the Lucky Chest of Beauty Secrets. The luxury beauty box’s design screams glamour, with a classic emerald-cut diamond shape that catches the eye when viewed from above. Each jewel-handled drawer hides a beauty secret, adding an element of surprise and delight for the user.

The key brand colours, Night Crimson and Rose Gold, were non-negotiable. This deep red runs throughout all Charlotte Tilbury branding, from products to stores, creating a cohesive and luxurious look. We used rigid board construction, carefully wrapped in Night Crimson pearlescent shimmer finish paper, giving the box a beautiful, soft-focus feel. The box features 12 glittering crystal pulls on rose gold-coloured stems, each revealing one of the bespoke drawers. These details encourage recipients to keep the box on their vanity long after they’ve enjoyed the products inside.

However, the pearlescent shimmer finish paper posed significant technical challenges. The balance had to be perfect – too much shimmer and it could transfer to other objects; too little and the desired effect wouldn’t be achieved. We had to ensure that the pearlescent additive was blended just right without any lamination to dull the shimmer.

From a design-for-manufacture perspective, the faceted shape of the box demanded precision engineering, from CAD through to hand-finished production. Our team developed a way to build the 12 individual drawers within a hidden framework, ensuring uniformity in size and stability during e-commerce transit. The crystal handles also required special attention. To protect them during transit, we included a corrugated liner in the secondary outer box, which prevented damage to both the handles and the outer box.

As a certified B Corp, sustainability was at the heart of our design. The paper is FSC-certified and over-recycled board, and the handles are made of glass and metal. The entire box can be recycled, including the full cardboard drawers and fitments. We ensured the foiling ratio was kept to around 10%, allowing for easy recycling through normal channels. This box is designed to be cherished and kept on dressing tables long after using the products.

Achieving the fine lines of the foil design posed another technical challenge due to the small point size and potential for plate registration issues. However, our team’s dedication ensured it was executed flawlessly. Creating the Charlotte Tilbury Lucky Chest of Beauty Secrets Advent Calendar was a true labour of love for Hunter Luxury. Every detail was meticulously planned and executed to reflect the brand’s core values of playfulness, innovation, and glamour.
