Gallagher in pole position for third Trevor Kletz lecture

Former Grand Prix senior manager and Formula One analyst, Mark Gallagher, will deliver the third Trevor Kletz Memorial Lecture at Hazards 27 – Europe’s leading process safety conference. The conference takes place in Birmingham, UK from 10-12 May 2017 and is organised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) in association with the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center.

Mark has over 30 years experience in international motorsport, holding senior roles with the Jordan, Red Bull Racing and Cosworth Formula One teams. Mark has been a member and contributor to both Formula One’s regulatory safety and technical working groups, responsible for striking the balance between commercial concerns, risk assessment, and the safety of drivers, teams and spectators.

Mark will draw parallels between risk management in the very different worlds of motorsport and the process industries. He will offer insight on how personal, commercial and operational risk is managed in the high octane world of Formula One and the drivers that create a ‘safety-first’ business culture in a sport that is watched by millions of people worldwide.

The lecture, which takes place during the opening session at Hazards 27, will offer a fascinating insight into the evolution of risk management and safety culture within Formula One, and how the lessons learned can be transferred to the high hazard industries.

The Hazards 27 programme also features four keynote speakers including Shell’s downstream Vice President with responsibility for health, safety, security and the environment, Sally Martin; Unilever’s European Process Safety Manager, Malcolm Sarstedt; BASF Process Safety Adviser, Chris Beale; and Marsh Energy’s London Engineering Hub Leader, Jasper Clark.

IChemE’s Interim Chief Executive, Justin Blades said:

“I’m delighted to announce our programme highlights for Hazards 27. Process safety performance has improved significantly thanks to pioneers like Trevor Kletz, but it’s important to remember that there is always more to learn.

I’m looking forward to welcoming Mark Gallagher to Hazards 27. His experience in managing risk within motor sport will provide the context for a really interesting lecture, and one that is directly relevant to the challenging environments in which chemical engineers work.”

Trevor Kletz was a regular contributor to the Hazards symposium series from its inception in 1960, and is widely regarded as the founding father of inherent safety. Following his death in 2013, the Kletz Lecture was created in 2015 to preserve his legacy, and continue to develop best practice in process safety.

Previous Kletz lecturers have included Dr Sam Mannan from the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Centre, and The Honourable Mr Justice Haddon-Cave who led the 2006 RAF Nimrod crash inquiry. Those interested in re-living Haddon-Cave’s remarkable lecture at Hazards 26 should visit: www.icheme.org/haddoncave.

Hazards 27 will offer technical insight into how to manage hazards effectively, and is an ideal event for anyone active in process safety and risk management for potentially hazardous facilities. Held together with conference partner ABB Consulting and in association with the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, this year’s programme will feature more than 70 technical presentations from leading players in industry, academia and regulators, and much more.

The event runs from 10-12 May 2017 at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Birmingham, UK. The registration portal is now available at: www.icheme.org/hazards27
