Award recognises ABB’s in-depth industry expertise that is helping to improve the performance of motor-driven applications across all industries. ABB has won Manufacturer of the Year at the Motion Control Industry (MCI) awards for the second year running. Presented at an awards evening on April 10, the MCI Manufacturer of the Year Award recognises ABB’s commitment to developing technologies and services that help improve the performance of motor-driven applications across diverse industries, from food and beverage and packaging to water and oil and gas.
ABB is one of the few companies that manufacture both variable speed drives and electric motors. This, coupled with its expertise in understanding all applications, from pumps, fans and compressors to elevators, conveyors and winches, has resulted in bespoke drives and motors packages aimed at specific industry applications. These products play a critical role in the reliability of industrial plant, where downtime might cost thousands of dollars a day.
Supporting drives and motors is one of the most extensive services offering covering every life cycle stage of the products from installation and commissioning, operations and maintenance, upgrade and retrofit to replacement and recycling.
Recently, ABB launched a suite of digital remote services including remote assistance, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance as part of the company’s ABB Ability TM digital platform. Using drive data in the cloud, the manual and labour intensive information gathering of traditional maintenance assessments is removed.
Recognising the fundamental importance of reliability in ensuring optimum total cost of ownership through reduced downtime and life cycle costs, ABB has embarked on a program to adopt systematic reliability engineering practices and develop facilities based on scientific approaches, such as the physics of failure.
Understanding failure is the key to ABB’s success – from reaction to prediction. To this end it has developed state-of-the-art facilities to carry out accelerated testing and analysis of failure in the field, with the results feeding back into its product design processes.
The award win is the second this year for ABB in the UK, which was named Supplier of the Year in the 2018 Pump Industry Awards, held in March.
