MAHLE Powertrain, the global leader in engine development and consultancy, has further increased its support for the Institute of Mechanical Engineer’s (IMechE) Formula Student event by pledging to sponsor three of the teams entering this year’s event, an increase from one team in previous years.
Following a host of competitive sponsorship pitches, the engineering firm has decided to back Cardiff Racing, The University of Birmingham Racing and Team Bath Racing Electric. All three teams have strong Formula Student credentials, with Cardiff looking to retain its 2017 crown. Whilst Birmingham finished as runners-up in 2017, and will be doing all it can to claim the title this year. Bath, is a team pioneering the use of electrified powertrains and was the most successful UK electric team in last year’s competition.
Simon Reader, engineering director at MAHLE Powertrain, commented: “We have been a long-time supporter of the Formula Student competition and are delighted to be able to offer our support to three of the most exciting teams taking part. Some of the concepts that come out of the event are really eye-catching and showcase what aspiring engineers can bring to the table. There is a big job to be done in terms of engaging young people with engineering, and competitions of this type really help to showcase what can be achieved when young people are given the resources and time to bring their ideas to life.”
As one of Europe’s most established educational engineering competitions, Formula Student sees teams from across the continent compete to produce a prototype single-seat race car for autocross or sprint racing, presenting it to a hypothetical manufacturing firm.
Taking place at Silverstone between 11 and 15 July, more information about the event can be found here: https://www.imeche.org/events/formula-student
