Protecting employees from exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) has been a hot topic since EU legislation came into force in the UK in 2016. Whilst the directive, which sets minimum health and safety requirements, is often considered for workplace environments – exposure to EMFs can also affect staff working off-site.
Wavecontrol has been manufacturing EMF testing equipment since 1997 and has recently launched a market-first personal protection device. The WaveMon RF-8 and RF-40 are available in the UK and Ireland from Aspen Electronics and are able to measure E-fields up to 8GHz and 40GHz. Additionally the RF-8 can measure H-fields up to 1GHz.
The device is the only RF Personal Safety Monitor on the market equipped with a GPS and altimeter for geolocation of measurements. Ideal for applications within telecoms, broadcast and military where employees are working remotely on transmitters, pylons or radar equipment, the GPS will provide the geographical position of a tower or piece of equipment and the altimeter the relative height from the ground. Thus, the radio frequency monitor will record ‘exposure level’ together with ‘date’, ‘time’, ‘geographical position’ and ‘height’, allowing you to perfectly locate the hotspots.
The WaveMon is a radio frequency exposimeter that has a datalogger for continuous data recording. Communication with the device is through a USB port that allows you to parametrise the device and download the recorded data. This makes it easy to create reports and allows you to keep a record of your exposure data for your safety.
Able to be clipped to a harness or worn on a belt or arm, the WaveMon continuously monitors a worker’s exposure to EMFs, and triggers an audible, visual and vibration alarm if pre-set levels are exceeded.
Key features of the WaveMon include:
- Weighted response for direct comparison to a specific limit: ICNIRP, European Directive 2012/35/EU, FCC or Safety Code 6 (2015).
- User-defined alarm threshold.
- E-field measurements up to 40GHz and H-field up to 1GHz.(model dependant).
- Isotropic sensors.
- RMS detection.
- Datalogger for reporting and historical registry of data.
- Powered by two standard AA batteries, disposable or rechargeable through its USB port, providing more than 200 hours autonomous use.
