A leading UK manufacturer of injection moulded plastic products, seeking to increase production capacity of paint can products, turned to Telsonic UK to provide a new Can Rim Sealing Machine, a key element in the final assembly stages of the product. The specification for this new machine required the capability to accept and process two different sizes of can, the 2.5litre and 5 litre variants, with diameters of 157mm and 180mm respectively. There are 2 components to be joined, the can body and the sealing ring, both of which are manufactured from polypropylene.
(Telsonic’s machine is used to process 2 different sizes of can)
Telsonic’s solution is based upon a stand-alone machine which is manually loaded and unloaded. Interchangeable nests, designed to suit each of the different can diameters, locate the components for processing, and a height adjustment facility accommodates the 2 different can sizes.
A common set of Titanium horns, mounted to 3 rotating heads, progressively weld the rim to ensure no deformation of the thin walled cans and to ensure the weld intensity remains consistent around the seal point. The weld heads reciprocate alternately 120 degrees, at a pre-determined speed, in the clockwise and anti-clockwise directions on successive cycles to keep cycle time to a minimum.
The ultrasonic technology used within the machine comprises of three Telsonic MAG2024S/SE2024 systems configured within a bespoke servo operated head, with integrated cooling. A combination of pneumatic and spring pressure is used to complement the amplitude of the ultrasonic welding process, delivering efficient and consistent fusing and sealing of the ring to the body. Machine control is achieved using a Siemens PLC and HMI panel. The system is also fully guarded and incorporates light-guards at the operator load / unload area. Now in full production, the machine continues to deliver high levels of quality and efficiency.
Telsonic UK offer a comprehensive range of ultrasonic modules and systems for a variety of plastic and metal welding, cutting, sealing, cut’n’seal, food cutting and cleaning applications within a wide range of industries.
