Keeping Cool with norelem’s New Range of Coolant Hoses

Coolant hoses are crucial to the safe operation, maintenance and lifespans of machinery. Now, thanks to norelem’s wide range of modular hoses and components, design engineers and manufacturers can create an almost unlimited combination of these vital parts.

Sometimes known as flexible hoses, coolant hoses are often seen releasing coolant onto metalworking machines like mills and lathes, to lubricate the machine and the workpieces and keep temperatures down.

Lubrication is important as external friction, or metal‑to‑metal contact, generates approximately a third of the heat that results from cutting, or machining. When the cutting zone is properly lubricated, cutting becomes more efficient, thereby reducing external friction.

“Heat produced during machining has a definite bearing on tool wear. By reducing the cutting tool’s temperature, even by just a small reduction, it will greatly extend the cutting tool’s life,” said Marcus Schneck, CEO of norelem. “This is where our range really excels. Their versatility and flexibility mean that coolant can be directed accurately and at optimum flow rates.”

The range is also suitable for other uses too. This includes as the hoses for compressed air systems, or as vacuum and suction hoses. As a vacuum, the hoses allow smoke, debris or liquids created during machining to be extracted out. Coolant hoses on the other hand can hold protective shields to protect machinery from damage or hold cameras in place to monitor machining equipment.

With countless fittings and a comprehensive range of nozzles, valves and accessories, the coolant hoses offer almost unlimited combinations. The range is available in three diameters; ¼” size (6.7mm diameter), ½” size (12.9mm diameter) and ¾” size (19.8mm diameter). The modular fittings mean the hose can be extended or shortened as required.

The components are not electrically conductive and can be used on Electro Discharge Machining (EDM). The range also does not rust and is resistant to most chemicals and solvents. Able to retain their positional stability at an operating pressure of up to 3.5 bar and a flow rate of 950 l/min for ¼” size, 1,800 l/min for ½” size and 4,300 l/min for ¾” size, the hoses can withstand temperatures of -20°C to +80°C.

The main body of the components are available in blue and black, while the accessories come in orange. For more about norelem and its range of engineering accessories, please visit https://www.norelem.co.uk/gb/en/Home.html.
