Competitors could represent Team UK on the world stage
Talented young engineers are being invited to take part in skills competitions which could see them represent their country on the international stage.
Registrations have opened for WorldSkills UK, where competitors will battle it out at a series of regional heats for a place in the finals held during The Skills Show at Birmingham’s NEC in November, which attracts around 80,000 visitors.
The winners will receive gold medals and could be eligible to represent Team UK at the WorldSkills International competition in Russia in 2019.
Twelve engineering competitions are organised and managed by skills experts Semta – which is employer-led and responsible for equipping the UK’s vital engineering, science and manufacturing technologies sectors with the skills to compete on the global stage.
A series of videos have been produced to show potential competitors the journey they can go on to become the best in the world at their skill Your Competition, Your Journey Videos
Joanne O’Brien, Semta’s UK competition organiser and career specialist, said: “Last year was incredible for the engineering competitions. No fewer than 10 out of 12 of Semta’s engineering team won medals at WorldSkills International in Sao Paulo, the nation’s best-ever haul.
“More than 130 talented young people made it to the finals in Birmingham in 2015 and we hope a similar number can make it through to this November’s Skills Show.
“It is a fantastic event where the elite of young engineers get an opportunity to showcase their skills in a competitive environment and inspire thousands of youngsters who come and watch them during the three days of the Skills Show to consider a career in engineering.”
Those competing in the Skillweld category have the added bonus this year of gaining a free qualification sponsored by Code a Weld as well as complimentary membership of The Welding Institute – the leading professional institution for the professional registration and certification of welding.
Engineering competition registrations are open now and close on 7th April 2016 and regional heats will be held throughout the UK at engineering businesses and Further Education Colleges.
