Electric vs Fuel Boilers

In this article, Carl Knight – managing director of process steam and heat transfer specialist Fulton – looks at the advantages of electric steam boilers versus their traditional fuel-fired counterparts.

Making steam with an electric boiler

Electric steam boilers work in a very similar way to fuelfired boilers except in the way that the water is heated.

The process of creating steam with an electric boiler is a relatively straightforward one. Electricity is passed through a heating element that acts as a resistor to create heat through resistance. Water from the feedtank is then pumped into the pressure vessel, heating the water enough to boil and become saturated steam at (depending upon the pressure setting controller) typically between 6 and 10 Barg, at which point the saturated steam is available to the process.

Advantages

Some believe that electric steam boilers are superior to fuel-fired steam boilers in a few ways. They believe that using electric boilers may be less expensive than using a fuel-fired boiler in the long term, whilst also possibly being more environmentally friendly.

Using Fulton’s portfolio of electric steam boilers as an example, less ancillary equipment is required than a traditional steam boiler, therefore helping to reduce the installation costs that come with a fuel-fired boiler. Electric boilers also generally have a smaller footprint and can therefore fit into smaller areas thanks to the way they are constructed and the lack of ancillaries that a fuel-fired boiler needs to operate.

Possible Disadvantages

Electric boilers are sometimes overlooked as a potential solution to steam generation due in part to the higher cost of electricity versus the cost of traditional fuels. To help meet its climate change and air quality targets, in the 2020 budget the government announced that it would remove the entitlement to use red diesel from most sectors, including for use in industrial boilers, from April 2022. The tax changes will ensure that most users of red diesel will use fuel taxed at the standard rate for diesel from April 2022. As a result, many companies are now turning to more sustainable methods of generating electricity, including solar or wind generation. These schemes offset, or at least partially offset, the higher fuel costs.

Safety of operation

Traditional fuel-fired steam boilers generally require multiple elements to operate successfully. In contrast, electric boilers are relatively simple devices. Additionally, because electric steam boilers do not use complicated

forms of heat exchange, they do not contain many of the potential hazards that are commonly present in a fuelfired boiler and will simply trip out if elements are exposed due to low water conditions that can arise in the operation of steam boilers.

Electric boilers are also generally easier to maintain because they have no heat transfer tubes, nor require burner maintenance or statutory non-destructive testing (NDT), all of which fuel-fired boilers often require.

Electric boilers also have smaller carbon footprints than their counterparts and, again thanks to their small footprints, can often be used for point-of-use steam requirements, making them a good choice for many smaller operations needing steam.

Additional benefits

Another benefit that should be considered is sustainability, thanks to their low maintenance requirements; and marketability owing to their green attributes, in the same manner as electric vehicles are seen as “green” versus petrol or diesel counterparts.

Electric steam boilers are also more efficient than fuelfired boilers because they require less energy to be put into them for operation at capacity. This is because there is little energy lost when the transfer of heat from the heating element to the water occurs, unlike traditional fuel-fired boilers where there is a substantial amount of energy loss from the air flow required to supply oxygen to the flame.

Additionally, because electric steam boilers can be fitted, in some cases, with up to 15 electrical elements (dependent on model), they have a high turndown (up to 15:1 in the case of Fulton’s electric steam boiler range), so are able to modulate efficiently to varying steam loads.

Electric boilers are, as already stated, more efficient, but for large generating capacities are frequently not practical to install due to large supply cables and infrastructure requirements. However, the actual maintenance costs can be up to 50%* less than those of fuel-fired steam boilers. Generally, the only major parts that are periodically changed are the electric elements themselves, yet these are often replaced quickly and cost effectively. This balances lower life cycle costs against the high maintenance requirements of fuel-fired boilers, including refractory repairs, 5-year NDT requirements, burner maintenance, flue maintenance and the requirement for highly-skilled and often highly-paid plant operatives.

High performance engineering fluid for precision solvent cleaningInnovation driven by legislation

Vapour degreasing is the simplest but most effective industrial solvent cleaning process which, until recently, has been subject to little change since it was first invented in the early part of the 20th century. This is a very mature chemical technology, but legislation changes in recent years has impacted the industry significantly.

Chlorinated hydrocarbons have historically been the solvents of choice for vapour degreasingcompatible with most materials, stable in use, producing a non-flammable saturated vapour heavier than air at a temperature greater than ambient.  Traditional solvents such as trichloroethylene exhibited all these characteristics but concerns about its carcinogenic properties and the danger to operators by exposure, led to a continuing search for a safer alternative. 1,1,1 trichloroethane based formulations became popular in the last century as a safer replacement. Although safer for users, it proved to be depleting the Ozone Layer and was subsequently banned. N-Propyl bromide (nPB) based formulations became popular in the last part of the century as a safer replacement, but this was later put in Annex 14 of REACH by the EU and can no longer be used as a vapour degreasing solvent in Europe. Countries around the world are now setting increasingly stringent environmental legislation to control emissions of Ozone Depleting and Global Warming industrial cleaning solvents. This has led to new chemical formulations being developed for industry.

Over 20 years of Innovation for industry

EnviroTech Europe Ltd have been supplying vapour degreasing solvent formulations for over 20 years, constantly responding to regulatory requirements for environmental and safety laws and the need for improved standards. Staff and distributors are highly trained to work with customers to advise on the use of industrial cleaning solvents, helping them to navigate through legislative changes and ensure their vapour degreasing and cleaning solutions remain within regulatory boundaries.

Customers may have recently read in the industry press about another major industrial supplier ceasing production of their range of fluorocarbon containing metal degreasing and vapour degreasing solvents. They may be concerned that other major suppliers will follow suit.

Envirotech Europe would like to assure the industry of its intention to continue the manufacture of its ProSolv® range of metal cleaning and vapour degreasing solvents for the foreseeable future.

ElectricVario screwdrivers from Wiha Ergonomic, precision and versatile solutions for demanding users.

Germany-based WIHA is one of the leading manufacturers of screwdrivers. Their products are recognised all over the world, especially for their excellent quality and reliability. This is supported by the fact that the company received a number of awards for, among other things, its innovative ideas, design and customer-oriented approach. When choosing the right screwdriver, it is worth exploring this manufacturer's range, in particular the ElectricVario series. It has been designed so that the individual components complement each other perfectly and satisfy the requirements of even the most demanding users.

• ElectricVario handles

• Wiha screwdriver bits

• ElectricVario adapters and extensions

• Wiha screwdriver sets – solutions for professionals

The screwdriver is one of the basic tools found in the toolbox of every DIY enthusiast and specialist. This ingenious invention comes in handy when assembling a lamp, dismantling a wireless computer mouse that still doesn't work after you replaced the batteries, but it is also indispensable for fitting, inspection and assembly work in manufacturing plants. Despite their popularity and simplicity, some screwdrivers outperform other ones, so it is worth taking some time to choose the right tool that suits you best.

ElectricVario handle

The handle is a crucial part of the tool and it is the handle design that determines the ergonomic use of the screwdriver. For the Wiha engineers, every detail matters, which is why the ElectricVario product family includes as many as six handle types that can be divided into three categories.

Stubby electric, PicoFinish® electric and slimVario® electric are the three classic handle types that you will encounter in virtually every workshop. The first of these, sometimes referred to as the "pear-shaped" handle, makes it possible to loosen even a tightly seized screw, the second one is a slim handle with a soft grip area for precision work, and the third one is an intermediate solution that strikes a balance between power and precision.

ElectricVario adapters and extensions

The Wiha family of tools also includes some clever solutions and adapters to expand the capabilities of the screwdrivers presented here. These include the easyTorque adapter for extending torque tools, slimBit extensions, an adapter for a 1/4" socket wrench and 1/4" adapter bits for TorqueVario®-S electric.

LiftUp® electric handle features a storage compartment accommodating several bits

LiftUp® electric is the most complex handle in a classic shape. You can store up to six bits inside the handle, and the bit holder features a locking system.

speedE® & TorqueVario®-S electric are torque handles for precision screwdriving at up to 0.4 Nm. These tools will never damage the material and are certified by the German VDE institute.

Wiha screwdriver bits

easyTorque adapter for extending torque tools.

Wiha screwdriver sets –solutions for professionals

Interchangeable bits guarantee the versatility of the ElectricVario series

The screwdriver bit is another essential part of a screwdriver and here, too, Wiha engineers have taken care of precision, ergonomics and versatility. The ElectricVario series comprises several bit variants, each with a different blade. Using them, you will be able to loosen almost any type of a screw – slotted, Phillips, Pozidriv, TORX, hexagonal or square one.

When looking for the right tools to equip your workshop, it is worth considering a purchase of a full set compiled by the manufacturer. The sets are available in many configurations, from small boxes and folding bags to suitcases which contain almost every tool included in the ElectricVario series. This type of a set is a must-have for a specialist who works in any maintenance department, it can also be a perfect gift for any DIY enthusiast.

Statiq wins HPCL tender to supply over 500 EV chargers across 12 states

Statiq to set up EV chargers at HPCL’s outlets across India

In a significant development underlining the ever-increasing presence of Statiq on the country’s EV charging landscape, India’s largest EV charging network provider has been awarded a tender by HPCL, one of government’s maharatna PSUs. Under this, Statiq will install over 500 chargers for HPCL at the latter’s outlets spread across the states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

While over 400 chargers will be of 3.3 kw capacity each, a few more than a hundred chargers will be of 7.7 kw capacity each. All types of EVs including two-wheelers, threewheelers and four-wheelers will be able to make use of these EV chargers. Importantly, only last year, Statiq had installed nearly 200 chargers – about 130 chargers of 3.3

kw and 75 chargers of 7.7 kw capacity – at HPCL’s outlets in a number of towns including Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Patna, Agra, Meerut, Dehradun and Varanasi.

“With HPCL undertaking a major and country-wide exercise in terms of setting up EV charging stations at their petrol pumps, we are indeed happy and proud to have been won this tender and become a part of their EV infrastructure building up journey. With these chargers present at their petrol pump stations, EV users would now be able to seamlessly access easy and convenient charging options. This would certainly enable them to get similar user experiences as they did with their petrol and diesel vehicles before. We have successfully worked with HPCL in the recent past and would only be happy to continue to do so in the coming future too, said Mr Aman Rehman, Head Of Government Relations, Statiq.

About Statiq

Founded in 2019 by Akshit Bansal and Raghav Arora, Statiq is an ambitious tech-first start-up that is rising to the challenge of building one of the largest public EV charging stations network in the country today. They aim to provide an end-to-end service for EV charging solutions for landowners, EV users, and vehicle manufacturers. If that’s not enough, they are also building India’s smartest EV charging network and helping each stakeholder grow with the company.

3-D Printing Expedites

Titan Enterprises’ R&D in Flow Meter Technology

Titan’s research, development and design advancements are focused around finding innovative solutions for OEM customers , pushing the boundaries of both the physical properties and performance of the products.

Titan started incorporating 3-D printing technology for design over 5 years ago, at the time using a stateof-the-art FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printer. New advances in 3D printing have seen this printer become redundant against Titan’s R&D investment in a new printer, purchased at a fraction of the cost yet capable of so much more!

With improved technology and an increased range of engineering materials available, this 3-D printing technique is taking a greater role in Titan’s research and development activities, allowing for quick and costeffective prototyping.

Although more expensive per cubic volume of model, the precision, detail and durability of Titan’s new UV resin printer allows greater fidelity and facilitates highly iterative design. The other advantage of the resin printer is that it enables printing of replacement parts and own tools to use.

“Being able to make small, precise changes to designs along the development route to test functionality and performance enables us to fasttrack through the design process,” states Neil. “This gives our R&D design engineers more freedom to experiment with novel designs at a lower cost, both in time and money, and rapid prototyping. Models and components can be tested, pushing the boundaries of concept design, durability and size in a short amount of time. As such, a tested and performing prototype that we have a good level of confidence in, can then go out to our injection moulding suppliers to produce a customer prototype.”

For example, for a recent OEM turbine development, the 3D printer enabled Titan to size and fit the flowmeter’s externals to the customer’s equipment and run preliminary integrated performance tests. Also, using transparent materials, Titan’s R&D engineers could visually examine the internal manufacture, fit and operation of the flowmeter, all of which sped up the product development dramatically. Historically, early prototypes were produced by CNC, which takes time and is expensive. By having an in-

house 3D printer, new versions can be quickly modified, and novel designs tested even the same day as conception.

Titan’s non-metallic flow meters, such as the NSF-Approved 800-series turbine meters and Beverage flowmeters used widely in the medical, food and beverage industries, lend themselves to the 3D printing process for development, progressing and enhancing designs.

To discuss an optimised flow measurement device for your specific application or process please contact Titan Enterprises on +44 (0)1935 812790 or email sales@flowmeters.co.uk. Or visit our website for further information.

A TRIO OF LEADING-EDGE CONNECTOR INNOVATIONS FROM HARTING

Harting is a leading expert in the fields of electrical, electronic and optical connection, transmission and networking. The company is renowned for developing innovations that provide simple yet reliable solutions, especially as markets and industries evolve quickly. This ingenuity will be on full display at Subcon 2023, where Harting will be showcasing a range of exciting new products, including:

The next level of modular industrial connectors

When Han-Modular® was released in 1993, it was the first modular industrial connector to run power, signal, and data alongside each other in a single connector. Now Harting has launched the next development stage, Han-Modular® Domino modules, which meet the industry’s requirements for space and weight savings.

Using Han-Modular® Domino modules can save you up to 50% installation space by integrating different transmission types in one module. This results in the connection technology becoming smaller and more lightweight. Additionally, the new smaller Domino modules require less energy and raw materials to produce. Domino modules are also compatible with existing components of the Han-Modular® series.

Complete cable assembly for energy storage systems

Harting also offers a new, complete cable assembly for energy storage systems. The new Han® S connector range makes it easier to connect large arrays of battery storage modules, expanding the use of renewable energies such as wind and solar power.

Miniaturised industrial Ethernet interface

To future-proof device technology, Harting has developed the ix Industrial®, a compact interface that delivers outstanding performance and robustness.

The ix Industrial® interface boasts 70% less installation space compared to typical RJ45 sockets, enabling manufacturers to use it in much smaller devices and more easily meet the needs of miniaturisation.

Despite its compact dimensions, the ix Industrial® still produces Cat. 6A performance for 1/10Gbit/s Ethernet at a control level, while its high current-carrying capacity supports both existing and future Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications.

Partnership with viastore: successfully set in motion at LogiMAT 2022

viastore COO Thomas Hibinger and Interroll CEO Ingo Steinkrüger announced their companies´ collaboration at LogiMAT one year ago. Based on Interroll’s modular platform technology, viastore expanded its mechanical portfolio to include its own conveyor technology solution, viaconvey. Today, viastore is in the thick of things—in projects with individually conceived and designed material flow systems for tomorrow.

By taking the step of further strengthening its mechanical conveyor technology competence in addition to its proven viaspeed and viapal stacker cranes, viastore offers its customers the advantage of being able to design and configure their materialflow systems even more individually and independently, thus increasing their efficiency. For this purpose, viastore accesses Interroll’s modular platform: conveyor rollers, motors and drives for conveyor systems, conveyors and sorters.

“We are very pleased about the trusting cooperation with viastore, which we were able to further intensify over the course of the last year. It is a pioneering example of partnerships in which the companies

involved combine their respective core competencies and strengths—to the benefit of users of material handling solutions in many countries around the world,” explains Steinkrüger.

Both companies use common technology platforms, intensifying the exchange of know-how and the use of tools to optimize processes from planning to installation. The systems will be controlled by viastore’s proven viacontrol solution.

“This step strengthens our customer focus,” says Hibinger. “We are thus expanding our product and service offering from planning to spare parts supply and, as a result, the benefits for our customers.”

Drive your European Train Control System (ETCS) retrofit with HARTING

The European Train Control System (ETCS) allows trains to run without traditional trackside signals. Instead, a series of communication systems monitor the train’s position and speed and relays information to the driver’s cab. These systems know exactly where the vehicle is and automatically issue travel clearance, allowing the train to move safely along the track.

New locomotives are already being designed and equipped with the appropriate technology. However, older rolling stock will need upgrading and retrofitting with cabling, wiring and connectors to run the ETCS system. HARTING have a wide range of rail-approved products and solutions to support this challenge.

Used in combination, HARTING’s preLink® system and Ha-VIS EtherRail® cables allow you to build secure data networks in trains. EtherRail® cables are specially designed for railway requirements whilst the preLink® contact block allows you to pre-fabricate

data cables outside the carriage before installing them, resulting in a reliable, simplified assembly.

Older rolling stock will need upgrading and retrofitting to ensure networks are fast enough to meet the demands of ETCS. This can be achieved via jumper cables, which ensure the smooth transmission of power, data and signals throughout the entire train. The Han-Modular® range, including the new smaller Domino modules, allows you to create a versatile solution by combining individual inserts for different transmission media into standard-sized industrial connector housings. The series offers over 250 different inserts, enabling a wide range of customisable options.

HARTING have the capacity to produce these project-specific jumper cable assemblies to suit your needs, including

installing components, routing cable harnesses and fabrication. Their design team can also create a 3D CAD visualisation of your build to ensure absolute accuracy before manufacturing begins.

HARTING have recently retained their prestigious Silver Quality Performance Level award from the International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS). Silver Performance is currently the second highest performance level issued by IRIS and is a significant achievement for HARTING, making them one of only two UK companies to receive Silver status and putting them in the top 5% globally of all IRIS certified companies.
