– 50 organisations now accredited by Investors in Young People –

The Glasgow base of US engineering and electronics firm Qualitrol received an important award from Minister for Youth and Women’s Employment Annabelle Ewing yesterday (21 January), commending its work with young people.

Qualitrol, which has headquarters in Fairport, NY, USA employs 12 young people in Glasgow and cites as the biggest single investment in its workforce, the support provided to young staff.

Investors in People Scotland, the organisation behind the Investors in Young People (IIYP) initiative, found that young people at Qualitrol highly value the wealth of training and career progression opportunities available to them.

IIYP, Scotland’s only people management award focusing on employers’ recruitment and retention of young people, originated through a key recommendation from the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce, led by Sir Ian Wood. Offered to all businesses across Scotland, the award recognises and supports organisations in the employment of young people.  Qualitrol’s presentation marked the 50th organisation accredited over the past seven months.

Bill Richardson, general manager, at Qualitrol, said:  “We are thrilled to receive this award today from Ms Ewing, it marks an exciting time for our whole team.

“Young people are a vital asset to our workforce and we remain committed to recruiting and developing a career path for all our young staff, some who may face difficult social challenges.  This has led to young people being nominated and winning various apprenticeship awards through Glasgow City Council.”

Minister for Youth and Women’s Employment, Annabelle Ewing said:  “Investors in Young People is a fantastic accolade and forms a key part of delivering the Scottish Government’s youth employment strategy. I would like to see more businesses aspiring to the achievement of the award.  Having visited Qualitrol, I’ve been impressed with how they are working to inspire and encourage young people in the workplace, so that they achieve their absolute best.

“This reflects well on the young people and on the business itself as they both grow and develop together.”

Peter Russian, Chief Executive of Investors in People Scotland, said “This is a fantastic achievement for Qualitrol, and I and the whole IIYP team would like to wholeheartedly congratulate them. The Investors in Young People framework not only recognises and supports organisations in the employment of young people, but marks them out as an employer of choice.  I envisage that many more organisations will wish to follow in the footsteps of Qualitrol and demonstrate their commitment to young people by working with the Investors in Young People framework.”

He continued: “The benefits of recruiting and developing young people are countless. These include the creation of a talent pool for the future, new and increased skills in areas such as IT and social media, fresh eyes and mind-sets into business operations along with enthusiasm and unique talents.”
The Glasgow, UK Qualitrol team is the leading global supplier of partial discharge condition based monitoring systems for Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS). The software and hardware products are designed and manufactured within the Glasgow site and then delivered to utilities with ongoing customer service, maintenance and diagnostic support.
